Iceland pictures: My photo highlights

Spectacular Iceland

Natural paradise of fire and ice

Iceland is rightly a myth among nature photographers. The island offers countless photo highlights in every season. On our rental car trip in autumn we enjoyed Northern lights, all sorts Waterfalls, Rainbows and of course the typical Icelandic one wild, unspoiled landscape.  The island is full of unique photo opportunities, a true paradise for landscape photographers. My - as always - self-planned photo tour led me along the Ringstrasse around the island.

Snæfellsnes: Iceland in miniature

We also have a worthwhile detour to Snæfellsnes peninsula made. At Grundarfjörður forms the striking Kirkjufell and waterfall Kirkjufellsfoss a great photo opportunity, the photogenic ruin awaits on the south coast Dagverðará a Snaefellsnesi and the famous black church Búðirkirkja to explore. The beach can be enjoyed on the wild coast Djupalonssandur, the lighthouse Mala reef and the rock gate Gatklettur at Arnarstapi take wonderful pictures.

Myvatn region in the less visited north

The diversified region around the Myvatn lake is significantly less touristy than the south coast. But still rich in sights and with all kinds of volcanic activity. Throughout the day you can visit the lava park Dimmuborgir, the steaming crater Krafla, Víti, Námafjall, the pseudocrater Skútustaðagígar and visit the sauna caves Stóragjá and Grjótagjá and then in the evening in the beautiful Mývatn natural baths relax and with a little luck still Northern lights marvel at.

The route continues via the whale watching capital Húsavík and the horseshoe-shaped canyon Ásbyrgi to the largest and most water-rich waterfalls in Europe: Dettifoss, Selfoss & Hafragilsfoss in the mighty gorge Jökulsá á Fjöllum.

Glacier lagoons and waterfalls: Southurland

At the famous South coast the classic photo highlights of Iceland are waiting for you. Thundering waterfalls like the mighty one Skógafoss, the romantic one Seljalandsfosswho have favourited DC-3 aircraft wreck on the beach at Sólheimasandur, as well as the picturesque glacier lagoons Jokulsarlon and Black Diamond Beach are the most famous photo spots on the whole island.

There is also the wild coastline as with Cape Dyrholaey and the black volcanic ash beach Reynisfjara to marvel at and produce new motifs over and over again, even if they have already been photographed a thousand times.

But also the capital Reykjavík - despite its manageable size - has a lot to offer. Like the sculpture Sólfar (The Sun Voyager), the architecturally appealing state church Hallgrímskirkja and the modern concert hall Harpa.
