Chamois are among the most impressive wild animals of the Swiss Alps. As a nature photographer, I have been accompanying chamois for years through all seasons, from the steep summer slopes to the deep snow of the mountain winter. Every picture is taken with great patience, respect for the animals, and often after long hours in the field. On this page you will find my most beautiful photos. Chamois pictures from the Bernese Oberland, Valais and Jura, as a fine art print or wall art for your home.
In winter, the chamois reveals its toughest and most photogenic side. Its thick, dark winter coat stands out serenely against the snow, and its breath and the swirling powder snow create a captivating atmosphere. Even in the coldest months, chamois remain in the high mountains, seeking out windswept ridges and steep, snow-poor slopes where they can still find food. Many of these chamois photos are taken in the cold and with patience, often in the early morning hours.
In early summer, the female chamois lead their kids across rocky ledges and alpine pastures. The kids are usually born in May or June and are on their feet within just a few hours. They are nursed by their mothers for about six months, but usually remain by her side for about a year until the next kid is born. Young females often join the herd permanently, while young males leave at around two to three years of age. These pictures of chamois with their young show family life in the high mountains: The kid stays close to its mother and learns early on to move confidently on the rocks.
The Bernese Oberland It offers diverse habitats for chamois. On the Niederhorn above Lake Thun and in the Grimsel region with its barren granite landscapes, photographs are taken that capture vastness and an alpine atmosphere. The animals are perfectly adapted to the steep terrain and move about with astonishing confidence.
In the Lötschental valley and around the Gemmi Pass in Valais, chamois encounter steep slopes, larch forests, and high limestone cliffs. They are often only visible upon closer inspection among the rugged rocks, making each encounter special. The pictures show chamois against the impressive backdrop of the Valais mountains.
A single chamois against a white background, reduced to the animal, light, and snow: these minimalist wildlife images have a particularly serene effect and are well-suited as wall art in modern spaces. The omission of all extraneous details focuses the eye entirely on the animal's posture and expression.
Chamois also live in the Jura Mountains, in rocky terrain and forests far from the high Alpine peaks. It is precisely here that a look beyond the well-known Alpine scenes is worthwhile. The photographs show how adaptable the chamois is as a mountain animal.
All designs are available as high-quality wall art. Whether as a large statement piece for your wall or a tranquil motif in your hallway: a chamois print brings a touch of the mountains into your home. Take a look in the Webshop or write to me if you are looking for an image in a specific format.
A notice: All photos and videos are taken with respect for wildlife. Wildlife resting zones and protected areas are vital for chamois' survival in winter; please always keep a safe distance.
