Alpine ibex in the Bernese Oberland, the Engadine, the Alpstein and the Valais
This gallery shows my most beautiful Alpine Ibex Images, which were taken over many years during hikes and nature observations in the Alps. Most of the photographs come from the Bernese Alps near my home – one of the best regions in Switzerland to see the majestic Alpine ibex (Capra ibex) to observe.
Alpine Ibex in the Bernese Alps and the Engadine
A large part of my photography took place in the Bernese Oberland. These impressive animals can be regularly observed on the rocky slopes.
I had further encounters with Alpine ibex in Engadine, in the Swiss National Park as in the famous Gran Paradiso National Park in the Italian Aosta Valley – the most important protected area for the Alpine ibex, after the species almost became extinct in the 19th century.

When the snow melts in the lower elevations, many animals stay on the open slopes above the forests. The combination of alpine landscape, fresh greenery, and the imposing animals provides impressive subjects for the Capricorn photography.
Alpine Ibex sightings in Switzerland
Switzerland is one of the best countries in Europe for the Alpine Ibex to experience in the wild. The most well-known is the Alpstein in the Appenzell region. The animals can be observed regularly in this striking mountain landscape around the Säntis.
Ibex are also frequently encountered in the high alpine landscape around Valais. Zermatt and in Lötschental. With a little patience, the animals can be spotted in the rocky regions above the tree line – sometimes even against the impressive backdrop of the Matterhorn.
Ibex rut in autumn – spectacular battles
The most impressive thing is the Capricorn rut In autumn. During this time, the powerful males engage in spectacular battles for the females. With tremendous strength, the animals rear up on their hind legs and clash their massive horns together with a loud crash.
I have witnessed this fascinating behavior on several occasions. The fights often take place in steep and rugged terrain, where the animals, despite their enormous strength, display remarkable sure-footedness. Such encounters are among the most impressive moments in alpine wildlife photography.
The Alpine Ibex – King of the Alps
The Alpine ibex (Capra ibex) It is one of the most impressive wild animals of the European high mountains. The adult males, in particular, with their mighty, strongly curved horns, define the typical image of this species.
Its exceptional sure-footedness allows the ibex to climb safely even in extremely steep and rocky terrain. This adaptation makes it one of the most fascinating subjects in alpine wildlife photography.
