Mexico pictures: My photo highlights

Yucatan & Chiapas - World of the Maya

Yucatan Peninsula - Heart of the Mundo Maya

Most of the Yucatan Peninsula belongs to Mexico and is spread across the three states Yucatan, Campeche and Quintana Roo. On the tropical hot peninsula, which is overgrown by extensive dry forests and criss-crossed by cenotes, there are countless ancient Mayan cities like the well-known Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Tulum, the worth seeing colonial cities Mérida, Campeche, Valladolid and the tourist resort Cancun.

Valladolid comes pretty close to imagining a typical small Mexican town. The pretty streets are full of pastel-colored colonial houses, cobblestones and the omnipresent VW Beetle.

The most famous Mayan cities in Mexico Chichen Itza its well-developed location attracts a particularly large number of visitors. The most famous buildings are the Kukulcán pyramid (El Castillo) and the warrior temple Templo de los Guerreros

Next stop is Merida, the capital of the state of Yucatán. In the center with many colorful streets and a lot of colonial flair it's lively and has a lot of tourists. From Mérida you can go on great excursions: for example the Mayan ruins Uxmal with the striking Pyramid of the magician (Piramide del Mago), the flamingo colonies in Celestun or in the «yellow city » Izamal.

Those who want to relax and bathe for a few days can do so on the wonderful beaches of the Isla Holbox, a natural paradise or along the Riviera Maya in the tourist resorts Tulum or Playa del Carmen with the turquoise blue Caribbean and white, palm trees Sandy beaches. Here you can - depending on the season - also with the huge Whale sharks snorkel. Real Mexico picture book atmosphere!

Chiapas - nature and culture under the sign of the Mayans

Chiapas is the southernmost state of Mexico on the border with Guatemala. In the mountainous highlands with dense rainforests lie archaeological Maya sites like the famous one Palenque and the wonderful colonial city like San Cristobal de las Casas.

San Cristóbal de las Casas lies in the central highlands at an altitude of 2100 m. In the towns in the north and northwest of San Cristóbal, inhabited by the Maya tribe of the Tzotzil, such as San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan Many indigenous traditions and ways of life are still preserved and cultivated.

The famous ancient Mayan city is still largely overgrown by the lowland rainforest Palenque. The most famous buildings in the city include the palace (Palacio) with the Observatorio and the Temple of the Inscriptions (El Templo de las Inscripciones), in which the sarcophagus and the jade mask of the Mayan ruler Pakal was found.

The waterfall is located near Palenque Misol-Ha, as well as the waterfall cascade, which shimmers green-blue in the dry season Agua Azul, a real natural wonder. Both places guarantee great Mexico pictures.

Further sights lie on the jungle river Usumacinta River in the so-called «Selva Lacandona». Like the Mayan ruins of Bonampak with fascinating wall paintings and the bigger one Yaxchilan with many sculpture finds. When you march through these ruins overgrown by the rainforest, you feel like you're in one Indiana Jones Film offset and Howler monkey hanging in the trees.
