This
Sri Lanka Pictures These photos showcase some of the most memorable moments from my travels on this tropical island in the Indian Ocean. Sri Lanka packs an astonishing diversity into a small area: ancient Buddhist temple cities, spectacular rock fortresses, tropical beaches, and fascinating wildlife. Sri Lanka is particularly renowned for its exceptionally high biodiversity. Numerous wild animals can be observed in the island's national parks – including...
Leopards (Panthera pardus kotiya),
Asian elephants (Elephas maximus maximus), sloth bears (
Melursus ursinus) as well as countless bird species. For nature and wildlife photographers, Sri Lanka is one of the most exciting travel destinations in Asia.
Leopards in Yala and Wilpattu National Parks
Among the most famous wild animals of Sri Lanka is the
Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya), an endemic subspecies of leopard. The famous [location name] offers particularly good opportunities to observe this elegant predator.
Yala National Park as well as the wilder and less visited one
Wilpattu National Park.Several times I was able to observe leopards resting in trees or observing their surroundings from an elevated position – a classic motif of the
Wildlife photography in Sri Lanka. Such encounters are among the most impressive nature experiences on the island.
Spinner dolphins off Kalpitiya
Besides the wildlife on land, the sea also offers spectacular encounters. Off the coast of
Kalpitiya Large groups of
Spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) Observe them. These elegant dolphins are known for their acrobatic leaps and spins above the water's surface. When hundreds of animals move through the turquoise sea at once, impressive photo opportunities arise.

Elephants in Udawalawe National Park
Another highlight of every trip is the large herds of the
Asian elephants (Elephas maximus maximus). These gentle giants are particularly well suited to the
Udawalawe National Park Observe them where they are often found at watering holes or in open grasslands. Encountering elephant families, playful young ones, or powerful bulls is among the most unforgettable moments of the
Sri Lanka Safari.
Sigiriya and the temples of the cultural triangle
Besides its wildlife, Sri Lanka also impresses with its millennia-old culture. Among the most spectacular sights is the famous
Lion Rock of Sigiriya, one of the country's most iconic landscapes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also the impressive
Temple complex of Anuradhapura They are among the oldest Buddhist cities in the world. Equally fascinating are the famous
Cave temple of Dambulla, whose elaborate murals and Buddha statues are carved deep into the rock. Somewhat off the beaten track lies the impressive rock temple of
Mulkirigala, which extends up the rock over several terraces and exudes a calm, almost mystical atmosphere.
Tropical beaches and coastal landscapes
Sri Lanka's coastlines also offer numerous photo opportunities. The long sandy beaches around [location missing] are particularly idyllic.
Tangalle, where palm-fringed beaches, rocky coves, and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean combine to create a tropical dream landscape. Other attractive coastal resorts include
Weligama,
Arugam Bay as well as the historic port city
bile with its well-preserved colonial architecture and the famous fortress from the Dutch colonial period.
More impressions from Sri Lanka
During my trip, I also took numerous pictures in other regions of the island. These include the vibrant capital city.
Colombo, the lagoon city
Negombo, the cultural center
Kandy as well as the cooler highland regions around
Nuwara Eliya.Landscapes like the [name of landscape] are also particularly impressive.
Horton Plains National Park with its cloud forests, the mountain region around
Ella or the wild coastal sections in the east of the island.
