This Borneo Pictures They show impressions from one of the most biodiverse regions on our planet. The island Borneo It is home to some of the oldest rainforests on Earth and numerous unique animal species. On my journey through the Malaysian state Sabah I was able to photograph orangutans, proboscis monkeys, sea turtles and many other animals in their natural habitat.
Dense tropical rainforests, mighty rivers, paradisiacal islands, and spectacular coral reefs make Borneo a paradise for nature photographers and wildlife enthusiasts. Especially around Sandakan, the Kinabatangan River as the islands off Semporna Extraordinary wildlife observations can be experienced.
The coastal city Sandakan It is considered an important gateway to the Sabah rainforest. In the famous Proboscis Monkey Labuk Bay – at the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary – I was able to see the rare Proboscis monkeys (Nasalis larvatus) Observe them up close. These endemic monkeys with their distinctive noses are among the most fascinating primates in Southeast Asia.
Encountering these unusual animals amidst the mangrove forests is one of the most impressive nature experiences on Borneo.
A particularly memorable experience was the visit of Pulau Seligan, one of the famous Turtle Islands. Large turtles regularly appear here after nightfall. Sea turtles on land to lay their eggs in the sand.
Especially the Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and occasionally also the Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) They can be found here. This nocturnal natural spectacle is among the most impressive wildlife sightings in Borneo.
Another highlight is the famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center. Here you can see the fascinating Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) observe – one of the most iconic animal species in Southeast Asia.
Just a few minutes away lies the excellent Rainforest Discovery Center, one of the best areas in Sabah for bird and wildlife photography. Hornbills can be spotted on the treetop walkways (Bucerotidae) and observe numerous other tropical bird species.
The night hikes are particularly exciting – so-called Nightwalks – where, with a bit of luck, you might spot nocturnal animals, frogs, insects, or small mammals.
The Kinabatangan River It is one of the best places for wildlife viewing in Borneo. From the well-known Sukau Rainforest Lodge From there we embarked on several river safaris through the dense riverside forests.
Here we were able to see, among other things, the rare Borneo pygmy elephants (Elephas maximus borneensis) observe – a particularly small subspecies of the Asian elephant. Also proboscis monkeys (Nasalis larvatusMacaques and numerous bird species live along this river system.
The enormous Gomantong Cave It is one of Sabah's most impressive natural wonders. Thousands Salagans (Aerodramus fuciphagus) They build their famous edible nests here.
In addition, countless people live in the cave. Bats as well as a large number of insects – including millions of cockroaches. Despite the intense smell, this place is a fascinating natural experience.
The little-visited area of Sungai Kapur is a real insider tip for nature photographers. From the remote Utan Rainforest Lodge Rare animal species can be observed there. The encounter with a was particularly impressive Saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) along the river. Rare bird species such as the Borneo ground cuckoo (Carpococcyx radiatus) They can be discovered here with a bit of luck.
The coastal city Semporna It is the starting point for some of the best diving areas in the world. The islands are particularly famous. Pulau Mabul and Island of Sipadan. The Underwater paradise Pulau Sipadan Sipadan boasts spectacular coral reefs teeming with sea turtles, moray eels, and countless tropical fish species. For many divers, it is one of the most beautiful dive sites in the world.
Off the coast of Kota Kinabalu The tropical island Pulau Gaya. Dense rainforests, mangroves and tranquil beaches characterize this island.
From lively Kota Kinabalu, impressive sunsets over the South China Sea can also be photographed.
At the end of my journey, my path led me to the capital city. Kuala Lumpur. The famous ones are particularly impressive. Batu Caves – a huge limestone cave with colorful Hindu temples and the monumental statue of the god Murugan.
