The long-eared owl (Asio otus), also known as the eared owl, is one of Switzerland's most secretive owls and is rarely spotted during the day. With its long ear tufts and bright orange eyes, it is nevertheless unmistakable. On this page you will find my most beautiful photos. Long-eared owl pictures, as a fine art print or wall art for your home.
During the day, the long-eared owl rests well camouflaged in dense trees, preferably conifers. Its striped plumage blends almost seamlessly with the bark and branches, and when threatened, it stretches itself out like a stub of a twig. Those who know its roosting tree can observe it from a respectful distance.
In winter, long-eared owls often gather in small groups at communal roosting sites; sometimes several birds sit close together in the same tree. They spend the quiet winter days motionless on their branches. Only at dusk does their silent hunting for mice begin.
My photos were taken in pine forests in Zealand. There, the owl, with its distinctive ear tufts, blends perfectly into the treetop. These striking ear tufts are not, incidentally, real ears, but rather part of its camouflage and body language.
The long-eared owl hunts primarily at dusk and at night over meadows and fields, mainly preying on field mice. Its soft plumage makes its flight almost silent, and its keen hearing detects its prey in the grass. During the day, however, it sits motionless in trees and can only be spotted with patience.
The long-eared owl grows to about 35 centimeters in length and is easily recognizable by its long ear tufts and orange eyes. It does not build its own nest, but usually breeds in old nests of crows or magpies. The fledglings, also called branchers, call for their parents at night during the summer with high-pitched, squeaking sounds.
