Faroe Islands pictures – dramatic landscapes and puffins in the North Atlantic

Nature and landscape photography in the Faroe Islands between Vágar, Kalsoy and Viðareiði

The remote Faroe Islands The islands in the North Atlantic boast some of the most spectacular landscapes in Europe. Steep basalt cliffs, roaring waterfalls, green grassy hills, and small fishing villages characterize this wild island world between Iceland and Norway. For nature photographers, the islands are a true paradise – with countless subjects for impressive shots. Faroe Islands pictures, dramatic coastal landscapes and a fascinating birdlife.

Even at Approach to Vágar A first impression of this unique landscape unfolds: rugged cliffs, wide fjords, and the untamed Atlantic Ocean. From here begins a journey to some of the most spectacular photo spots in the entire archipelago.

Vágar – Waterfalls, puffins and the rocky island of Tindhólmur

The small village Sørvágur It often serves as a starting point for explorations on the island. Vágar. One of the most famous places in the Faroe Islands is the remote village Gásadalur, where the famous Múlafossur Waterfall plunging directly from the green cliffs into the Atlantic Ocean – one of the most iconic motifs for classic Faroe Islands pictures.

Here I also had my first encounter with one of the islands' most famous inhabitants: the Atlantic puffins (Fratercula arctica). With its colorful beak, it is one of the most popular photo subjects in the Faroe Islands and breeds by the thousands on the steep cliffs in summer.

Another highlight on Vágar is the viewpoint Trælanípan. From here the lake Sørvágsvatn, the largest lake in the Faroe Islands, as if it were floating high above the sea – a spectacular optical illusion and one of the most famous photo spots in the islands.

From Sørvágur we also undertook a Boat tour along the coast of Vágar. The destination was the striking rocky island. Tindhólmur, whose jagged peaks rise dramatically from the Atlantic. Despite – or perhaps because of – the almost daily rain, particularly atmospheric photographs of this wild coastal landscape were taken here.

Mykines – Bird Island in the Rough Atlantic

A day trip to the remote island Mykines It is one of the most famous natural attractions in the Faroe Islands. The island is considered the most important breeding ground for seabirds, including Puffins (Fratercula arctica), Common murres (Uria eelgum), Razorbill (Alca torda) and the elegant Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis).

During our visit, however, the typical Faroese weather showed its harsh side – an extremely wet day with dense fog and strong winds. It is precisely these changeable conditions, however, that give the islands their unique, dramatic atmosphere.

Gjógv, Saksun and the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands

On the island Eysturoy Some of the Faroe Islands' most beautiful landscapes are located here. The village Gjógv It is famous for its natural rocky gorge, which serves as a small natural harbor. The secluded village is equally picturesque. Saksun, whose church and lagoon are among the most classic photo subjects in the archipelago.

The highest mountain in the Faroe Islands, the Slættaratindur (882 m), was completely shrouded in fog during our visit – a typical experience on the islands, where weather and visibility can change completely within minutes.

Klaksvík, Klakkur and the Northern Islands

Only at the viewpoint Clakkur above Klaksvík The weather finally improved. From here, one of the most beautiful panoramas of the entire archipelago unfolds, overlooking the fjords and islands of the North Faroe Islands.

The landscape, with its steep mountains, green slopes and small villages, appears particularly dramatic here and is among the most impressive motifs for Faroe Islands landscape photography.

Kalsoy and the famous Kallur lighthouse

Another highlight of the trip was the ferry to the narrow island. Kalsoy. The road leads through several tunnels to the small village. Trøllanes, from where a short hike leads to the spectacular Kallur Lighthouse leads.

The viewpoint was made possible by the James Bond film «"No Time to Die" (2020) Known worldwide, it is one of the most iconic photo spots in the Faroe Islands. During our visit, we experienced a breathtaking sunset here.

That evening I managed to capture two particularly iconic moments. Faroe Islands pictures: a sheep (Ovis aries) on the roof of a traditional house with a grass roof, as well as a Ewe with her lamb in the fantastic evening light against the dramatic coastal landscape.

The wild north coast – Viðareiði, Kunoy and Tjørnuvík

The spectacularly situated village lies in the far north of the archipelago. Viðareiði, framed by steep mountains and the open Atlantic Ocean. The landscape here appears particularly pristine and rugged.

The island also Kunoy offers impressive views of the rugged coastline of the North Faroe Islands.

Another highlight is the picturesque bay of Tjørnuvík, from which one can see the striking rock needles Risin and Kellingin You can see it in the Atlantic. From here I started a hike to the viewpoint near the mountain. Mýlingur. But as so often happens in the Faroe Islands, the weather didn't cooperate that day either: dense fog, rain, and strong winds prevented the hoped-for view of the dramatic coastal landscape. So, in the end, I had to return without the planned photo – an experience that's almost become part of the experience in the weather-capricious Faroe Islands.

Tórshavn, Nólsoy and the birdlife of the Faroe Islands

The capital Tórshavn It is one of the smallest capital cities in Europe and boasts a historic quarter Tinganes a particularly charming town center with traditional wooden houses and grass roofs.

From here, a trip to the island is worthwhile. Nólsoy, which is known for its large seabird colonies. Besides puffins, other species can be found here, including... Fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis), Common murres (Uria eelgum) and observe other typical seabirds of the North Atlantic.
