The African elephant (Loxodonta africanaThe elephant is the largest land mammal on Earth and one of my absolute favorite animals in wildlife photography. You can watch elephants for hours – their complex social behavior, their intelligence, and their impressive appearance never cease to fascinate me.
These mostly gentle giants are remarkably adaptable and inhabit a wide variety of habitats. African elephants live in dense tropical forests, roam the vast savannas of East and South Africa, climb mountainous regions, and even migrate along the dry riverbeds of the Namib Desert.
Particularly impressive are the gigantic bulls with their mighty tusks – the so-called Big Tuskers. But playful elephant calves or the close social structure within an elephant herd are also among the most beautiful moments of a Elephant Safari and offer unforgettable motifs for impressive Elephant pictures.
This gallery shows African elephants from some of Africa's most famous national parks. The light-colored elephants are particularly impressive in the Etosha National Park in Namibia, whose skin appears almost white due to the light lime dust of the salt pan.
Another spectacular motif is the famous Red Elephant of Tsavo in the Tsavo National Park in Kenya. There, the animals get their color from the iron-rich red dust of the savanna, which settles on their skin when they wallow. Among the most beautiful places for elephant watching is also the Amboseli National Park in Kenya, where large herds of elephants gather against the impressive backdrop of the Kilimanjaro have your picture taken.
In Tanzania counts Tarangire National Park Among the best places in Africa to observe large herds of elephants. Especially during the dry season, hundreds of elephants gather here along the Tarangire River among ancient baobab trees – a spectacular subject for impressive photography. Elephant photos.
Further recordings were made in the world-famous Kruger National Park in South Africa, where elephants are among the most common large mammals of the savanna. The region is also particularly known for its large elephant populations. Addo Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, which was once established to protect the last elephants in the region and today is home to one of the densest elephant populations in Africa.
I made further elephant observations in Murchison Falls National Park and in Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda, where large herds of elephants roam the savannah landscapes along the Nile.
The so-called [missing information] exert a particular fascination. Big Tuskers These are exceptionally large bull elephants with enormous tusks that can sometimes touch the ground. These rare animals are considered living legends of the African savanna.
Today, Big Tuskers are only found in a few regions of Africa, especially in the Amboseli National Park as in Tsavo National Park in Kenya. Thanks to decades of protection, some of these impressive elephants have survived here and are among the most spectacular subjects of the Elephant photography worldwide.
Besides the African elephants, my pictures also show the Asian elephants (Elephas maximusThese somewhat smaller relatives live in the tropical forests and savannas of South and Southeast Asia.
I had particularly memorable encounters in Yala National Park on Sri Lanka. In open bushland and at waterholes, Asian elephants can often be observed and photographed very well – frequently even from a relatively short distance.
Even in the famous Jim Corbett National Park in Northern India, the oldest national park in India, is home to numerous Asian elephants. In the dense sal forests and along the river landscapes, one often encounters small family groups strolling leisurely through the forest.
A unique natural phenomenon is the famous Elephant Gathering in the Minneriya National Park in Sri Lanka. During the dry season, several hundred people often gather here. Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) around the Minneriya reservoir.
