The rodeo: Calgary Stampede

  • copious pancake breakfast
  • visit the full rodeo program
  • Eat a Monster Turkey Leg
  • Another party at the Tented Cowboys

The long night has of course left some traces. Especially since a pancake breakfast is already waiting for us at 10 a.m. They both mean it really well with us. After mountains of pancakes, we finally capitulate.

Soon afterwards we start again to the Stampede area. This time in the company of Carl and Judy, whom we soon lost sight of in the turmoil. The real highlight is waiting for us: the rodeo. This is followed by the classic rodeo disciplines such as bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, lasso throwing, riding with a saddle and riding without a saddle. We see a group of volunteer cowgirls and pose with them for a souvenir photo. The entertaining afternoon ends with the supreme discipline: spectacular bull riding. With prize money of $ 100,000 to the winners of the individual major disciplines and $ 1,000,000 in total on the final day, the Calgary Stampede is the best paying tournament in the world.

Again and again we amuse ourselves with the nonsensical legislation on serving alcohol. You are only allowed to consume in certain zones, including ID requirements, in the arena, however, nobody seems to be interested in that. We sell the countless roller coaster and other action rides - which Carl bought us in advance - because we don't like to stand in the enormously long lines. Soon it will be time to eat. I eat a delicious, monstrous turkey leg.

Then we join the queue of the cowboy tent. Despite another $ 25 entry, we stand in line for almost an hour. We get into conversation with locals on various occasions, which entertains and significantly shortens the time. In any case, the tent is full again. The program is more or less the same as the evening before, simply a fascinating experience. At the end of the evening we are again looking for a taxi to drive us home.
