Swim with river dolphins

  • Watching Amazon river dolphins followed by a swim in the river
  • Keep an eye out for more animals on a lonely part of the river
  • Return to Rurrenabaque

Our last day in the pampas begins with another highlight. We drive upriver to a large floodplain where the Amazon river dolphins stop often. And we actually get to see some of them right away. It is almost impossible to take a usable photo of the mammal emerging from the murky water for a very short time. In return we get to see some birds.

After a few attempts, we drive to an area that is still somewhat open, where also numerous other tourist boats arrive. Here you can jump into the water yourself and with a little luck swim with the dolphins. I don't want to miss that, even if it's better not to imagine what else you're sharing the water with. A few times a dolphin appears relatively close to me, but immediately disappears again in the brown broth. As more and more tourists appear, the animals disappear more and more.

Instead of waiting here like the other tour groups, we drive further upstream through more densely overgrown area. Guide Domingo sees something that astonishes even him: There's a sloth hanging right by the water! We can watch the lazy fellow for a while while he is looking for food.

Sightings of other howler monkey families, water turtles, a shy capuchin monkey, another sloth and two yellow-breasted macaws. After this eventful morning, we have to go back to the lodge, where a last, hearty meal awaits us.

Soon after, we load our things and set off rapid return trip to the port of departure. The blazing sun makes for enormous heat and we have to apply lotion regularly to avoid being burned straight away.

In the port we get again two river dolphins to face and this time I actually manage to take a great picture of two animals. The two seem a snake in its mouth to have and play with her!

Loading the luggage onto the Landcruiser, one follows breakneck return to Rurrenabaque. The devil knows where the guy got his driver's license!

The cozy cold shower washes away all the dust of the last few hours. In the late afternoon we march into the center and drink a fruit juice with milk. We explore the nice town a little further before we go to dinner.
