But first things first. I spend a restless night on the noisy Transcanada Highway. At half past ten I get up to continue my journey. After a while I turn onto the old road 1A so I don't have to continue on the highway. Although the weather is wonderful, visibility is quite limited due to various forest fires in the region. Which is of course anything but ideal for landscape photography.

Suddenly I can hardly believe my eyes. A wolf is actually marching right next to my car. Unfortunately he doesn't show up for long. The road is divided here for both directions and so luckily act spot-on, go back and take the other lane. Lo and behold, the wolf crosses the street again and this time I even manage to take a photo. Now I'm really motivated for today. Soon afterwards I reach the totally overcrowded parking lot at Johnston Canyon. Here I start a hike to the Inkpots. The path first leads through the gorge and to various waterfalls. As soon as the terrain rises further, the crowd decreases significantly. The path continues through the forest until it finally leads into a high valley where the Inkpots are. These are a handful of crystal clear, turquoise spring pools. After about 12 kilometers I am back at the parking lot and drive on.

A large black bear can also be photographed soon afterwards. The ranger has to send people back into the car again because they are massively below the safety distance. Soon after, I reach Lake Louise. At the Visitors Center I inquire about hostels, campgrounds and the street. I find out. that the forest fire is dangerously approaching the Icefield Parkway. That is why the street is usually closed in the afternoon. I decide to take a shower at the Lake Louise Campground. Then I turn onto the Icefield Parkway. With this cloudy sky, the magnificent lakes are only half as spectacular as they were a week ago. The animal world has another highlight to offer. A half-strong grizzly bear grazes directly on the road. Like the wolf in the morning. he also wears a collar. He marches directly towards my car and I manage to take some dream shots of Master Petz again. The bear doesn’t bother with the increasing crowd and even crosses the street. On the next pass, the road is blocked by big bighorn bucks. Soon after, I will register for a quiet place at Wilcox Creek Campground. Here I cook myself a rice stew with carrots and peas. There is also a steak, tomatoes and peppers. After washing the dishes, today's images must of course be viewed. The agony of choice is what they call it. In the end I decide in favor of the wolf, not because the picture would be particularly good, but because it is simply special to see a wolf.

Wolf observed directly on the street

Did a hike through Johnston Canyon to the Inkpots

Black bear seen just outside Lake Louise

Shower stop in Lake Louise

Continue north towards Jasper on the Icefield Parkway

another grizzly also directly on the street

Choosing a picture of the day has perhaps never been as difficult for me as it is today.
